Finals weekend proved well-contested and very enjoyable, not least the men's singles final between Jim Kelly and Huw Rees. For much of the time both players performed to a very high standard indeed, before Jim finally prevailed 22-18 with a well-crafted four.

Our annual foray to play an outdoor friendly against Chardstock confirmed why we prefer the indoor version of the game. The match went ahead in decidedly moist conditions, and everyone got soaked. Brute force was needed to propel the woods more than half-way across the green. Miraculously, one of our rinks (Baker, Earl & Munro) won 32-3, but the remaining three rinks were all out-aquaplaned by the opposition and the overall result was a narrow defeat.

The Summer County Mixed League teams finished third and fourth, a great effort. Ann & Andy would like to thank all those who represented the club.

The good news is that we're getting new heaters; the less good news is that it means there can be no bowling between Wednesday 23 September and teatime on Friday 25 September.

Summer Morning League champions are the Tigerwoods (Lorraine Hill, Elaine & Peter Marshall, Andy Mair and John Burwood). The battle is on for second place. Bowl Movements or Wishful Thinking?

Just in case you can't get enough bowling during this quiet period before the winter leagues and competitions start, the Social Secretary has arranged three Monday morning 'spoons' events for September 14, 21 and 28. These are suitable for all skill levels and a chance for newer members perhaps to meet a few more people in an informal setting. All the details are posted on the noticeboard.

The club's Red and Yellow teams have finished third and fourth respectively in the Dorset Open Mixed Summer League - a great effort finishing above much bigger clubs. The Red squad comprised Iris Ashton, Chris McBain, Tracy Marley, Debbie Milton, Annie Legg, Brian Baker, John Burwood, Mel Glazer, Phil Hedges, Andy Spilller and Frank Ward. The Yellow squad were Jackie & Phil Godfrey, Lyn & Peter Sandall, Sue & Brian Walsh, Liz Walker, Sue Winkle, Ann Turtell, Mike Fletcher and Alan Wotherspoon.

Eight bird-themed teams of three took part in the latest 'organised roll-up'. Victory went to the aptly named Tits who evaded the clutches of the Magpies by a single point. Perhaps the most exciting part of a noisy but thoroughly enjoyable evening was the four-way play-off for third place, which reminded onlookers of the days when they used to queue up for their Covid jabs. As usual on these occasions, the lucky ones were those who didn't win a prize.
